Frequently Asked Questions

What is better, wood decking or composite decking?

It depends on your requirements. Composite decking is very durable, and strong, and lasts longer than a wooden deck. On the other hand, wood decking has a natural grain, colour, and organic look. In the end, which material you choose comes down to what you want and the look and feel of the area, you’re improving.

What should the spacing be of the superstructure below the decking planks?

Different materials have different specifications. A wood deck’s planks must be less than 450mm apart, while composite decking planks can be up to 300mm apart.

Will the wooden planks discolour?

Yes, wood will discolour. That said, some will retain their colour more than others. Light hardwood will fade less than darker options.

Ultimately, the look and feel you want will give the best indication of which wood to use. Composite decking will discolour much less than any hardwood timber.

Can wooden decking support a hot tub?

In short, yes. However, the strength and durability of DIY wood decks are not as reliable as professionally built decking. A professionally constructed and reinforced deck is strong enough to support big structures, like a hot tub.  and many other objects.

Subject to the decking area being built, H3-treated timber is recommended for the sub-structure.  The surface area of the deck determines the timber size and profile.
